Of all the themes in Final Fantasy VIII, love is one of the main ones. There is no other Final Fantasy game whose central theme is love & marriage. Yes, many of them involve love and use it as either a motivation for one character or an underlying subplot [i.e. Rosa & Cecil, Tifa/Aerith & Cloud, Celes & Locke, Yuna & Tidus] but this game’s story and its central theme revolves are this basic human want and need. Even each other the main characters try their hand at it, whether it is Laguna, who lost his first love while he was away, only to find that he could love again in Winhill; Quistis who tries at love with a familiar person, fails, and finds that she’s just confused about her feelings; or Selphie, who has forgotten the one she loves.
With that, of course, out beloved Matron also takes her chance with love. When she was a young girl, she met and fell in love with a young man named Cid Kramer, and they were wed. From there they went on to support each other in many ventures together, including building Garden and putting together their plans for SeeD.
Even with her dark secret, Cid still supported her. Deep down they both probably knew this would happen; that she would one day become a great and evil sorceress, like Adel, and have to be taken down. he didn’t necessarily try to stop it; perhaps she warned him. But in the end, even after the failed attempts at killing her by SeeD and the horrible things she did to Balamb and Trabia Garden, Cid forgave her and they resumed their life as the leaders of the Garden.
During game play, Cid becomes somewhat of a mentor to Squall. He sees potential in him and wants to help him. He even makes him the leader of the mobile Balamb Garden after evading attacks from Galabadia. He is a kind and caring man who plays more of the role of a father to the children in the Garden, as opposed to a Dean or Principle.
