Squall’s rival who causes havoc within Garden. A candidate for SeeD. Although Seifer is a naturally gifted solder, his inability to take orders and control his temper has earned him the label of “problematic”. Although recognizing and praising Squall’s abilities, Seifer regards him as his ultimate rival.
Seifer Almasy is probably the last person within Balamb Garden that you would put the word “Knight” with, but somehow his dreams all came true one fated day when he decided to assassinate the President. All throughout his childhood he had romanced the idea of the Sorceress and her Knight, by her side protecting her heart, and set out for just that.
Seifer was not the calmest child. Growing up in the orphanage he was somewhat outspoken, and a bit of a bully to the weaker children [really, just Zell] but, under neither his touch exterior was something more. Much like Squall, he wanted everything to play out a certain way and did not understand much why people did the things they did.
So, once he became a member of Garden [a recurring senior, no less] his role as the leader of the disciplinary committee was the highlight of his achievements. However, his lack of caring for school and obedience lead him to being nothing more than an underachiever and, once again, a notorious Bully. But Seifer’s efforts, although not for school and work, were not distracted from what he really believed in.
He fulfilled his position as the disciplinary committee leader well, and even led his group in his last SeeD test. He helped Rinoa and her rebel group in Timber, the Forest Owls, to get a conference with Cid so that they could be liberated. He longed to be the Sorceress’s Knight [in a romantic sense] and protect her heart.
Perhaps Seifer is a more emotional or more ambitious version of Squall, for his beliefs lead to his destruction. He led his test group to a potential danger and went off course. He charged the President and threatened to kill him because of his own emotions. He ended up just being Ultimecia’s puppet as opposed to what he truly wanted, weakened in a moment of hope from a childhood dream and an all too familiar mother figure.
While Seifer could be considered an overly ambitious or maybe even emotionally confused young man, the greatest aspect of his character was his heart. Unfortunately, his heart was out on his sleeve and easily manipulated by his romantic dreams. He is a Knight with great faith and a fire inside waiting to escape.
