Anima is the dark Aeon of pain and sorrow, first introduced to us by Seymour. It is the largest aeon to posses, even out sizing bahamut. Anima attacks with Pain and Oblivion, two of the most powerful attacks in the game. This Aeon is first ueveiled to the people of Spira during an attack on Lucca right after the Blitzball Tournament.
Your first encounter with Anima is in the Macalania Temple after Seymour and Yuna emerge from the fayth. You cannot possess Anima, though, until you receive the airship and enter the proper coordinates to get to the Baaj Temple.
While praying to the fayth you find out the story behind Anima and a lot about Seymour's past. You discover that Anima is really Seymour's mother who sacrificed her existence for him to thrive in a world where Guado and Man cannot live side by side. But when Seymour tasted this power at a young age, he thirsted for more and became corrupt along with the other officials of Yevon.
Anima's role in the game is a vital one, not just because she is one of the most powerful aeons, but because she is in fact a character in this story. She helps the group realize why Seymour became tainted, and gives a good example of why most of the people became aeons in the first place. 'Though it was small recompense for what she did to him…'
